The New Feathers Award

January 1, 2021
2020 Award Winner
Happy New Year. It is a great pleasure to announce this year's award winner. We had many outstanding works of art this year, and many great nominees. In the end, we agreed that Elizabeth Harmatys Park's "38th and Chicago" deserved the award. Her poem is a powerful and bold expression of the hardships of life, of community, and the outrage felt at the death of George Floyd, not only a beautiful poem but an appropriate selection for the year 2020. Congratulations.

2020 Nominees
New Feathers Anthology was conceived as a way to support the arts and literature that we love, to give artists a place to present their work outside of commercial concerns. As such, if an artist is included in New Feathers, we saw their work as worthy of our support and encouragement. Money, however, is one way we show appreciation of an artist, and since we cannot pay everyone, we wanted to create an annual award, the New Feathers Award, to be presented to one contributor to the journal. All profits from donations and sales of the anthology, after expenses, would go towards that award. This year, since it was our first, we had no profits, but we still want to offer an award, of $300—enough to buy some supplies, pay a bill or two, enjoy a party, or buy some groceries. How it is spent is up to you. Really, the award is about acknowledging our appreciation of your work. And we like to think that we may be helping an artist when the artist needs the help.

Selection of nominees was incredibly difficult. Each of our panelists selected one work from each issue. Going through the works of the eighty artists we published this year, I was amazed at the quality of the work we received. I could have nominated many from each issue, and I know this was true for the other panelists. That there was so little cross-over in our lists suggests that we had a lot of great work this year. Thank you to all of you. The following is our list of nominees for 2020, selected from the contributors to New Feathers Anthology. The award winner will be selected by John, Caroline, and me, and will be announced soon. Look for the smoke signals from New Feathers headquarters.
