please know it is with a heavy
blow, like glitter from my palm,
that I submit my formal, fancy
resignation from the role of
Inner Self-Critic. I may have been voted
Most Likely to Self-Criticize in school
but I feel no need to carry that mantle
into a world where criticism is the currency
and consumers pay through the nose
to hide their flaws.

unreal expectations of real human beings.)
The overtime necessary for this wearing job takes time
away from true pleasure, such as
reading in the yard while listening
to beetles amble by,
tilting my head up to feel
the sun exactly in the center of my nose bridge.
I could go on, but this role has taken enough
of my precious life already
