Prayer for Winged Loosestrife Rediscovered in Vermont
Deb Baker

I breathe in record
heat, multiple floods,
trees that have been
cut down for no good
reason. I breathe out
fish returning to clean
waters, rare wildflowers
reappearing beside a road,
ferns unfurling, spawned
where they’ve stood
for thousands of years.

I breathe in asphalt, leaf
blowers, jet contrails
cutting through the sky.
I breathe out elders
arrested outside banks,
young people lying down
in streets, churchyards
sprouting solar panels.

I breathe in this whole
earth, how it was made
from dust and spirit and love,
I breathe out a way forward,
breathe out
the beauty of just
being here,

breathe out,
breathe out,
breathe out.
