amazed that i exist
Lisa Panepinto
when i come in from forest clouds
holding burnt out matches in my hands
in the kitchen of the old farm house
the faucet running cold clean water
i come in from the cold water
amazed that i exist
a painting of hands
praying above the stove
the spigot pouring icy water
i keep filling my cup and drinking it down
my belly filled with cool electric
all i know is love’s all that matters
holding my baby
wanting him near
the white cat orange cat black cat
the pictures of soldiers who died in the war
giving up penance and allowing compassion for self
listening to advisors who tell me drink lots of water
we are here to care for the earth and water
our souls are products of the earth
the glass trees snow mink love
embracing and being accepted by god
given gifts and reconciling thru food
being driven up the snowy back road
did she ask you about the roots? because i think
it would help me with what i’ve seen overseas
the soldier said to me the hawk flying
as fast as the car the roads we make
skiing over frozen lake the quiet
wind moving us the roots feeling
vibrations of where we’re at a mind
at the end of the roots gold bellied
shivering to stay warm
in the night fire thawing us
the dogs and cats mary talks to
the river the carrying place
the love of mary sensing my mind
knowing i need water
being shown the healing flowers
the deer coming right to the yard
alice in her blushing scarf
steady snow and below zero cold
when she fainted she saw people from pleasant point
pulling her back down from the sky
everybody’s talking about the storm
see you soon said mary
