Live from Hope
Vivian Wagner

The spruce here are short,
narrow, as if they’re young,
but really they’re
as old as they get.
Paths meander
through moss,
past mushrooms
growing on stumps.
Everything smells
like it’s beginning
and ending at once,
and water’s difficult
to tell from land.
