Mud-Caked Dogs
Kelly A. Hegi

The sky is emptying into the hard ground
Pounding again and again
Washing everything
Every crack and hole
Small, tan tufts of grass drink deeply
They will be green tomorrow

Winter debris cascades down the hillsides
Depositing piles of leaves and sticks on the tiny makeshift riverbank
Lightning splits and clamors for attention
Mud-caked dogs scatter skinny grey squirrels
It continues to rain
Shaking off the last remnants of winter
