Wild Fruit
Miles Hitchcock

Collecting fruit
from the orchards of the past

it is all still growing
and overgrown

the trees that survived
are tall and strong

gather from them
warm ripe fruit

and hold in your hands
the wild yield
of untended seasons

they were planted
for this reason.

Even if memory seeps
from time like a wound

the years wield nature’s tools
and flesh returns as fruit.
