Nightfall
Lorraine Caputo

Metal store blinds grate
closed. People retreat home. The
wind quickens, whirling

acacia pods &
apamate tree flowers,
dirt & litter ’round.
Mimosa-colored lightning
shudders across the river.

Then the rain soddens
the city, plunged into a
lightless & mute night.
